Essential Information

Challenges during the Langtang Valley Trek

Trek in the Langtang region is a moderate one suitable for all trekkers. Hence, it is a popular trekking destination for beginner to seasoned trekkers. However, the Langtang trek requires a good level of fitness. Some of the challenges of 7 days of Langtang Valley Trek are as follows:

Isolated trails

The isolated trails of Langtang Valley Trek offer a serene experience. However, the remote trekking routes are full of steep uphill and downhill climbs that are physically demanding. The further you go, the trek takes you to remote areas. There is a lack of infrastructure, and trekkers can quickly feel disconnected. It can also mentally stress trekkers. Hence, trekkers must be ready to walk in such conditions. If you are interested, check out our Tamang Heritage Trek.

Varied terrains

Trekkers must traverse varied terrains throughout the trek. It includes steep and narrow sections, rocky trails, suspension bridges, and snowy paths. Depending on the destination, they walk 5 to 6 hours daily. The trek requires good physical strength and stamina. Cardiovascular exercises and training, running, jogging, and swimming, can help boost physical strength, stamina, and endurance.  It helps to ease the difficulty of the Langtang Valley trek.

Altitude

The trek’s highest point of the Langtang Valley Trek is above 4000 meters, making ascending to higher regions more difficult. Likewise, the high altitude nature of the trek exposes trekkers to the risk of altitude sickness.  Although it is relatively lower than treks like Everest Base Camp Trek, the altitude is higher than Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and can be fatal. Hence, proper acclimatization and precautions can minimize the risk.

Unpredictable weather

The higher you go, the more unpredictable the weather becomes. Despite the season, the weather changes rapidly and becomes more challenging to predict. Choosing the right season and checking the weather forecast before the trek is the best way to prepare yourself. Similarly, proper equipment and gear preparation are crucial for overcoming the weather challenges of the Langtang Valley Trek.  So, you need to prepare and plan your trek accordingly.

Accommodations and Meals

Teahouses, lodges, and guest houses are standard accommodations on the Langtang Valley Trek route. These accommodations only offer basic facilities and limited amenities. Locals run these places, and although they are essential, they are cozy and offer a glimpse of the region’s rural lifestyle.

The rooms are usually on a twin-sharing basis and have limited furniture. You will mostly find squat-style, communal bathrooms. However, some accommodations may have rooms with attached and Western-style bathrooms. The teahouses provide beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. For hot water/ shower, internet, charging devices, etc, you will have to pay an additional cost of around $2.

These accommodations also offer meals to their guests. You will find a variety of local, continental, and Western cuisines. Some meal options and food on the Langtang Valley Trek include oats, cornflakes, bread (Tibetan/ chapati), soup, porridge, Dal Bhat, sandwiches, pasta, Sherpa steam thukpa, curries, pizza, ramen, etc. It is best to avoid dairy products, caffeine drinks, and alcoholic beverages during the trek.

Note: Nepal Base Camp’s Langtang Valley Trek package includes accommodations and meals during the trek. However, the trek cost does not cover additional costs and drink expenses aside from drinks with standard meals.

Best Time for Langtang Valley Trek

Langtang Valley Trek is one of those treks that is possible throughout the year. Spring and autumn are the peak trekking seasons, while summer and winter are off-season. Take a look at the various seasons at different seasons:

Spring (March to May)

Spring is a beloved season among trekkers and nature enthusiasts. The weather is pleasant and sunny, and the days are longer. Trekkers can witness the entire rhododendron forests, wildflowers, and meadows blooming. Along with the flora, the fauna are also most active during spring. You are most likely to get a glimpse of rare animals like red panda, musk deer, and more.

Similarly, the days are clear without much obstruction. It is one of the best times to witness the vibrant nature and Langtang Himalayas. The nights and mornings are usually cold at the beginning of spring. They gradually become warmer as spring progresses. The average daytime temperature is between 10 to 20 degrees Celsius.

Summer (June to August)

It gets hot and humid during the summer season. Likewise, the monsoon season enters the country with heavy rainfall. Most hilly areas receive heavy downpours, and the trails get wet, muddy, and slippery. There is also the risk of landslides, mudslides, and flooding. The lower region’s trails are moist, and heavy rain clouds obstruct the views. Mosquitoes and leeches also make it difficult for trekkers.

However, the Langtang region falls in the rainshadow area, receiving very little rainfall. The vegetation looks luscious and green, making it ideal for botanists. It is also the best time to view the rainwashed landscapes. The average daytime temperature ranges between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. It is not an ideal time for the Langtang Valley Trek and requires proper preparation.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn or fall season is one of the favorite times for trekkers. The crisp air, vibrant landscapes, and thriving flora and fauna make it the ideal choice for trekking. Likewise, the weather is stable, and the temperature is moderate. The visibility is prominent; the trek provides magnificent snow-capped vistas. The precipitation level is also low, and the trails are dry.

The autumn foliage adds to the beauty of the vibrant landscapes. However, the trails are busier, and accommodations are usually fully booked. It is best to prebook your lodges before setting off for the trek. The average daytime temperature in autumn is between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. It gradually becomes colder by the end of the season.

Winter (December to February)

The higher altitude regions receive a lot of snowfall during winter. The daylight is short, and the temperature drops significantly. Heavy snow and blizzards cover the trails and make them icy and slippery. But the snow-covered landscape and mountain panoramas are spectacular.

The daytime temperature ranges from 6 to 9 degrees Celsius, and the nighttime temperature can drop below freezing. There is sunlight during the daytime, but it isn’t warm. Experienced trekkers choose the winter for a more thrilling and adventurous trek experience. However, trekking requires proper preparation, clothing, and equipment at this time.

Professionalism and fast friendship.

I have now hiked with Sappa and his company twice and honestly I can't imagine Nepal without him. My friends and I often have short timeframes to organise these trips and the peace of mind just leaving everything with Sappa and knowing it will be perfectly arranged is priceless. From landing at the airport to hugs good-bye nothing was forgotten. Great trek choice, hotels, food, company and local information, we actually often found many other travellers coming to Sappa for help whenever they had issues. Pure professionalism and a wonderful person to boot! I spent days chatting to Sappa as we wandered Nepal and he is always happy to give you as much or title information as you'd like. I learnt so much about the history, culture and future of the country. As a final note, on my first trip to Nepal I became extremely sick whilst up on the mountain due to a personal slip-up regarding the water and I honestly am not sure what I would have done had Sappa not been there. Considering I was running a fever, could barely stand and had no way of helping myself, it could have ended badly. How he moved mountains to get me off the hill through a network of jeeps and small camps whilst at the same time organising my immediate admittance to a wonderful clinic in Pokhara I will never know. The fact that I was hiking back up the mountain with him in a few days was just shy of a miracle and I'm sure in almost anyone else care my trip would have been brought to a swift end. Thankyou mate, we all care for you deeply.

Unforgettable Langtang Trek with Sappa

We took an 11-day trekking trip with Sappa and a porter in the Langtang and Helambu region in Mai 2011. We entered Langtang valley at Syabrubesi, trekked up to Kyanjin Gompa and continued to Helambu via Gosaikunda lake and the Lauribina La pass. The trek was wonderful. It leads through different vegetation zones with rich an colourful flora and fauna and amazing Himalaya mountain views. It also offered a deep insight into the Tamang culture and the customs, life and tradditions of Nepalese, Tibetan and Tamang people. Sappa is a very experienced guide who knows the region very well. He did a great job at scheduling the daily treks and adapting the length and speed of trekking to our personal needs and desires. In particular, he was a good consultant regarding any issues of altitude sickness. Sappa handled all issues with the lodges, local government officials, bus and taxi drivers with great care. He answered all our questions regarding names of mountain tops, nature and other details of the area with great excitment. It was a pleasure to listen to Sappa’s anecdotes on life, religion, politics and nature of Nepal and Nepalese people. Sappa’s story-telling and humour has made the trek an unforgettable experience. We highly recommend Sappa as understanding, experienced, funny and sympathetic guide. After eleven days in the remoteness of the Himalaya our guide has become a friends.

Exceptional Family Treks with Sappa and Nepal Base Camp Treks

In October 2014, 2015 I completed another wonderful family trek in Nepal to Langtang and Gosainkund lakes thanks to Sappa and his company “Nepal Base Camp Treks”. I first met Sappa in 2008 on a family Gokyo Lakes Trek and EBC Trek. At that time, I was greatly impressed by the highly professional approach he took to mountain guiding. I’m very happy to report that in 2014 nothing has changed. Sappa continues to maintain an exceptionally high standard of service and this together with his warm, generous and engaging personality ensured everyone in our party had an amazing time during their visit to Nepal. We were treated to fantastic traditional Nepalese food and cultural performances at welcoming and farewell dinners in Kathmandu; expertly and safely guided over 14 days of trekking through an incredibly beautiful landscape; and provided with detailed and knowledgeable commentary during our tours of all the main sites around Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan. I’m very happy to report that the organisation of our transport, sightseeing, accommodation and trekking arrangements was first rate and that over three weeks everything ran very smoothly indeed. Overall, Sappa‘s vast guiding experience and mountain knowledge ensured that our itinerary was structured in such a way that it provided us with a good deal of flexibility and ample time to absorb the magnificent mountain views while trekking, as well as not being rushed on our tours of Kathmandu and surrounds. On this trip, a few in our party were first time trekkers. What a fantastic introduction to trekking in the Nepal Himalaya they received thanks to the great care and attention to every little detail provided by Sappa and his fabulous support crew Manoj, Shankar and Suraj. Thank you Sappa, for also keeping up the tradition of supplying us with bananas and chocolate bars. I must also mention that the pomegranate seeds the crew provided to us on our way to Langtang was an unexpected but greatly appreciated treat. Importantly, from a safety aspect, we were more than pleased to find that Nepal Base Camp Treks used modern four wheel drive vehicles to take us to the start of our trek in Syabrubesi and also for the return journey from Dhunche. We were also very impressed to observe that Sappa and his company take very good care of their support crews. If you are planning to visit Nepal, I have no hesitation in recommending Sappa and his company “Nepal Base Camp Treks” for trouble free trekking and touring. You will not be disappointed. I can’t wait for my next trek with Sappa, which will be around Manaslu trek.
