Overview of 12 Days Everest Base Camp Trek

The 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek is the best trekking experience if you are planning to explore the beauty of Nepal. The first trek by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to EBC started in 1953. Trekking 12-day treks instead of 10 and 11 will give you more acclimatization days. Thus, it reduces the chance of getting altitude sickness.

The breathtaking views throughout the route are a major attraction for trekkers in the Everest Region. This trial takes you to the foot of the highest mountain in the world, Mt Everest. Aside from that, you will also have a chance to explore the breathtaking views of other snow-capped peaks, such as Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other surrounding peaks.

Furthermore, the Everest Base Camp Trek, which is twelve days long, gives a proper chance to enjoy local Sherpa culture and hospitality. Taking this trail, you will go to Namche and Tengboche's lovely villages and monasteries. In addition, the moderate level of difficulty of the trek makes it perfect for both novice and experienced trekkers. The EBC trek is ideal for cultural and natural enthusiasts, offering well-developed paths and proper accommodations.

Additional Information

Distance and Trekking Trail of Everest Trek

The Everest Base Camp trek starts from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. To begin the trek, you first take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is about 138 kilometers (86 miles) away. The flight takes around 30 minutes. Lukla, the small bustling town in the Himalayas, is the gateway to the trekking adventure to Everest Region.

The trekking trail from Lukla to Everest Base Camp covers approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) round trip. You will pass through various villages, forests, and valleys. The trial can be a little challenging as you have to walk on paths that can be steep, rocky, and sometimes slippery. This journey will take you through beautiful landscapes, suspension bridges, and scenic viewpoints of the Himalayan.

Usually, the trek takes about 12 to 14 days, including proper acclimatization. Each day, you will walk for about 5 to 7 hours, covering different distances depending on the terrain and altitude. Along the way, you will stay in tea houses or lodges, which provide basic accommodation and meals. The trekking trail not only challenges you physically but also offers a chance to experience the culture and hospitality of the local Sherpa people.

12 Days Everest Base Camp Trek

The 12-day Everest Base Camp trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by a trek to Phakding. From Phakding, you hike to Namche Bazaar. Upon reaching there, you spend an extra day acclimatizing or exploring local sites and hiking to nearby viewpoints. Continuing the next day, the trek then takes you to Tengboche. This place is famous for its beautiful monastery and stunning mountain views. Next, you head to Dingboche, where you take another acclimatization day. Here, you can prepare your body for the increased elevation.

Leaving Dingboche, you trek to Lobuche and then to Gorakshep. This is the last stop before reaching Everest Base Camp. After an exhilarating visit to Base Camp, you return to Gorakshep for the night. The following day, you hike to the viewpoint of Kala Patthar for breathtaking sunrise views of Mount Everest, then descend to Pheriche. From Pheriche, you trek back to Namche Bazaar and then to Lukla, retracing your steps through the scenic Khumbu region. Finally, you fly back to Kathmandu after completing the 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary.

Permits Needed For The Trek to Everest Base Camp Trek Experience

To undertake the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek, you need to secure two primary permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. These permits are essential for preserving the natural environment and supporting local development.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: This permit is necessary to enter the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It costs NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 25) for foreign nationals. You can get the permit in Kathmandu or Monjo.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: This permit, which costs NPR 2,000 (approximately USD 15), is necessary to enter the Khumbu region. You can get this in Lukla. It supports local infrastructure and development projects in the area. You can get it when you take the National Park Permit.

Best Time to Take 12 Days EBC Trek

The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. The weather is warmer in the spring trekking season, from March to May, and the skies are clear. You can see the breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. The trial also offers you with beautiful blooming rhododendron flower forest. Thus adding the scenic trekking trail.

Similarly, the post-monsoon season provides stable weather conditions with clear skies from late September to November. During these months, the moderate temperatures and the trails are dry, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable trekking experience. We recommend you avoid the monsoon season (June to August) due to heavy rainfall and slippery trails. Likewise, the winter months (December to February) bring harsh cold temperatures and limited visibility, posing challenges for trekking.

What Accommodations Are Available In This Trek?

During the Everest Base Camp trek, various types of accommodations are available to suit different preferences and budgets:

Teahouses/Lodges: These are the most common and popular accommodation options along the trekking route. Teahouses provide basic but comfortable lodging with twin-bedded rooms and shared bathrooms.

Camping: For those seeking a more adventurous experience, camping is also an option during the Everest Base Camp trek. You can rent camping equipment or hire a trekking agency that provides fully organized camping trips.

Homestays: In some villages along the trekking route, travelers may have the opportunity to stay with local families in traditional homestays. This is a perfect option if you want a deeper understanding of the local culture and traditions.

Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek

Our unforgettable journey to EBC was completed successfully and brought to us a lot of positive emotions. Probably the most interesting part was the path through Gokyo lakes as there were less tourists and we saw more breathtaking views. Nepal Base Camp Treks team organized our trek quickly and professionally: all documents was prepared in time, Sappa met us in the airport explained to us everything and organized our further journey, we appreciate it so much! Thanks a lot to our amazing guide Rajan, he is strong, attentive, professional guide and a very good manager. We were glad to travel with him!

Private trek with Raj (Gokyo + Chola Pass + EBC)

Our 13-day trek was beyond amazing, all thanks to our guide Raj, porter Budhha and managing director Sappa. We were very impressed with how everything was so well organized, it seemed like every little detail was covered (hotel/airport pick-up, flights to/from Lukla, tea houses, food, day to day itinerary... literally everything!). Raj made every effort to ensure we enjoyed this experience, he was very attentive to our needs, knowledgeable about every aspect of the trek, and even tried to lift our spirits when things got tough. We couldn't be more grateful for this rewarding experience.

Spectacular Gokyo Ri

Just completed the Gokyo Lakes trek with NBCT and couldn’t recommend them more highly. Sappa made communication and logistical arrangements very easy. I’ve now done 2 treks with my guide Surcha Tamang and we’ve become firm friends. He looks after his clients extremely well and has strong relationships with all the tea houses in villages enroute which makes meals, accommodation etc very easy. Surcha takes his responsibility very seriously and ensures a safe and carefree trip from airport pickup to airport drop off. You should book with NBCT and request Surcha if you can get him!

Exceptional Everest Base Camp Trek with Nepal Base Camp Treks

I am John from England and I stumbled across the Nepal Base Camp Treks Pvt.Ltd while surfing on the internet for my Everest Base Camp Trek. With so many tour agencies to choose in Kathmandu, It was quite hard to spoil for choice- but finally decided to go with Nepal Base Camp Team because they simply stood out excellent reviews and a 100% customer care satisfaction. To me and my team, that was very impressive and I and my team do not regret our decision. On the based of positive reviews, We already had a high expectation from Nepal Base Camp Treks and each and every expectation our team had were simply met with such grandiosity that the company really deserves all of the praises it gets. NBCT made us have a wonderful experience right from the start to end. Sappa Lama was very quick and prompt in his email responses and was always happy to respond to the silliest of our inquiries a very patient man with an excellent customer service focus. For Nepal Base Camp Team, their customers come first and they will be ready to go to lengths to make sure their customers safe and well looked on the mountain and in a city. They employ the best guides and porters in the mountain. I and my team did the Everest Base Camp Trek (5364m/17,594fts) accompanied by my guide Pawan Tamang, who made sure that our team had a wonderful lifetime experience in Himalaya. A polite person and very knowledgeable about the Sherpa culture and Tibetan Buddhism, Pawan has the maturity to take the responsibility of his customers in the mountains. from Luka to Lukla throughout my trek, Mr.Pawan was in the front and my Porter Temba at the back. They are always made us sure never slipped or took a wrong step and informed us to stay mountain sidewalk all the time. They ask you to enjoy the freedom you want in the mountains, taking as many rests and catch photo stops as you want. Pawan took to take care of me and my team Joana in every lodge, bringing us a hot bowl of water in the mornings so that I and my team could wash our faces and teeth. Believe me, it is very cold up there above 4000m that without hot water I would be feeling pretty hard throughout the day! These acts of care and concern that really made our trek wonderful and amazing. Overall, we all team can vouch for one-step-ahead for Nepal Base Camp Treks and their mountain guides and porters. in my opinion, their customer focus makes them stand apart. Even when things go wrong, like bad weather or flight delays, or your sickness, they never complain and put the first priority on their customers first. It was the best care that we were shown that have won our heart over by the company. It was such a memorable treat to be with them and to experience the beautiful Himalayas with a helpful and cheerful mountain guide who made sure that we were all right at each and every step on the way. Mr. Sappa Lama and Mr. Lako Lama were also just a phone call away in the office at Kathmandu, giving us the reassurance that everything was going to be all right and that we were in good hands. Thank You so much Nepal Base Camp Treks for such a fabulous time in the Everest region, showing such a best customer care that all the time and we will back again sometime in future with our family

Highly Recommend Sappa for EBC Trek

I trekked with Sappa to EBC in 2007. We were introduced to him by three groups of friends who had each trekked with him before on the others’ recommendation. They were not wrong. Sappa ensured we were comfortable and from the moment we arrived in Nepal. Organising everything from transport to our hotel to making sure I’d all the gear needed for our trek. He even wanted to carry my pack! during the trek the high level of service continued. Sappa was knowledgeable and we felt confident in his ability at all times. He made the trip fun and was always making us laugh. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending my friend Sappa.
