Overview of Mohare Danda Khopra Trek

The Mohare Dabda Khopra Trek is a 17-day journey through the off-the-beaten-path regions of the Annapurna region in Nepal. This hidden gem connects the majestic Mohare Danda with the less-traveled Khopra Ridge. Gaining popularity in recent years, the Mohare Danda Trek with Khopra is ideal for those who want to escape the chaos of busy world and regular trekking routes. Similarly, the trek is an extraordinary adventure for those wanting to experience the harmonious fusion of natural beauty and cultural richness.

The trek to Mohare Danda and Khopra is moderately challenging and suitable for travelers of all ages. Thus, it can be done solo, with a couple, with family, and in a group. The route involves three major viewpoints, including Mohare Danda (3,300 m), Khopra Danda (3,660 m), and Muldai viewpoint (3,637 m). The highlight of the trek offers panoramic Himalayan views of Mount Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and, somewhat surprisingly, Manaslu. Similarly, the views of the sunrise and sunset from the viewpoints are mesmerizing. 

The journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by another drive to Beni. From Beni, you began trekking to Bansakhraka and then to Nangi. From there, the route climbs up the ridge of Mohare Danda, your first destination. From Mohare, the trek descends to Swanta to get to another destination, Khopra Danda. From there, the pathways continue through Dobato, leading to Muldai viewpoint. The path then descends to Chile, Jhinu Dabda, Pitam Deurali, and finally to Kande before finishing the trek and heading back towards Pokhara. 

Furthermore, the journey takes place within the Annapurna Conservation Area, offering sights of various flora and fauna throughout the route. Additionally, Khayer Lake, at an elevation of 4,700 m, is the highest point on the trek. 

17 Days Mohare Danda Khopra Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative from Nepal Base Camp Trek will greet you. Then, our representative will take you to the private vehicle, escort you to the hotel, and assist with check-in. After checking in, you can freshen up and take a rest. In the evening, we’ll meet you for a general conversation and a brief discussion about the trek, accompanied by a welcome drink. Your overnight stay for the day is at Kathmandu’s Hotel.

Day 2: Preparation Day in Kathmandu

Day two is for your preparation day in Kathmandu. On this day, you can do last-minute shopping, check your gear, or explore some of Kathmandu’s heritage sites. Similarly, you can double-check your first aid kit and medications, visit the pharmacy if needed, and take altitude sickness medicine if you feel like you need it.

You can take the opportunity to visit the city’s prominent tourist sites, including Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Temple, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, and Patan Durbar Square. Additionally, you’ll meet your guide on the day. We suggest you go to bed early, as you should begin your journey the next day. Overnight at Kathmandu’s Hotel.

Day 3: Drive to Pokhara

Today, you’ll drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. As Mohare Danda Khopra lies in the Annapurna region, and Pokhara serves as the gateway to any destination within the region. The drive begins along the Prithivi Highway, located west of Kathmandu. The road is a winding mountain highway driving along the Trishuli and Marshyangdi rivers. Along the way, your bus stops at local highway restaurants for lunch. After driving for about 6-7 hours, covering a distance of 200 km, you’ll get to Pokhara, where you’ll stay overnight.

Day 4: Drive to Beni & Trek to Baskharka

Your fourth day begins with a drive from Pokhara to Beni. The road follows the Kali Gandaki River, passing through small villages that offer a view of lush green hills. Similarly, the route provides a stunning scenery of waterfalls. A 3-4 hour drive from Pokhara takes you to Beni. After reaching there, you can freshen up, fill your tummy, and get ready for the day’s adventure. It is your first day of trekking that takes you from Beni to Baskharka. 

The route to Baskharka from Beni goes uphill through forests, local farmlands, and a quiet village. You’ll walk on stone steps while enjoying peaceful surroundings with views of hills and valleys. It takes 2.5 to 3 hours to get from Beni to Baskharka. Your day’s overnight and dinner points are at the local tea house in Baskharka.

Day 5: Trek to Nangi

Your morning starts with a warm cup of tea at your bedside while enjoying the beauty of the Himalayas. Today, you’ll make your way towards Nangi from Baskharka after finishing your breakfast. The route goes through rhododendron forests, terrace farms, and traditional villages. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful mountain views, the majesty of nature, and even some birds. 

The path is mostly uphill and can be challenging at times, but the peaceful surroundings and fresh air make it an enjoyable experience. You’ll stop at Danda Kateri along the way for lunch while taking in the stunning scenery and Kaligandaki valley vista. From there, the route takes a stroll to Nangi Village. It takes 5-6 hours, covering a distance of 9.1 km, to get from Baskharka to Nangi. You’ll stay and have your dinner at the tea house of Nangi on this day.

The sixth day takes you to your first destination on the journey, Mohare Danda. After a delicious morning meal at Nangi, you’ll start your trek. Today’s trek is one of the most beautiful parts of the journey to the Mohare Danda Khopra Trek. The route ascends through dense forests filled with rhododendrons, oaks, and pines. As you climb higher, the view of the Himalayas, including the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, will appear.

The final part of the trek is a bit steep, but remember, the reward is worthy of every challenge. After walking for 5-6 hours, covering a distance of 5.7 km, you’ll get to the summit of Mohare Danda. When you reach there, a 360-degree view of the mountains, hills, and valleys will greet you. It is also an ideal spot to watch a majestic sunset. Your nightstay and dinner are at the beautiful village of Mohare Danda.

Day 7: Trek to Swanta

Wake up early in the morning and treat your eyes to a mesmerizing sunrise over the mountain peaks of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Nilgiri. After you finish your breakfast while enjoying the view from the summit of Mohare Danda, you’ll depart from the village and make your way towards the day’s destination, Swanta. The pathways are mostly downhill through beautiful forests and peaceful mountain routes. Likewise, the views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges will be heading into the forest.

The route to Swanta from Mohare Danda is filled with natural beauty, accompanied by the sounds of birds and fresh mountain air. You may also pass by shepherd huts and small streams along the way, adding to the beauty of your trek. A 5-6 hour trek from Mohare Danda takes you to Swanta. The village is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the simple village life. The view of Mount Dhaulagiri is also eye-appealing from here. Your overnight and dinner will be at the village of Swanta for the day.

Day 8: Trek to Khopra Danda via Chistibang

After breakfast at Swanta, you’ll begin your trek towards your another and final destination, Khopra Danda. From Swanta, the route goes through forests and across small streams. On the way, you’ll see stunning views of Dhaulagiri and pass by yaks or buffalo grazing in the open field. After several hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Chistibang, where you’ll have lunch. 

Continuing the trek from Chistibang, you’ll walk uphill via alpine meadows. About 6-7 hours of trek from Swanta, you’ll get to your final destination of the journey, Khopra Danda. From the top of the Danda, you’ll see the breathtaking views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna South, and other peaks. You’ll spend your night and have dinner at the peaceful village of Khopra Danda.

Day 9: Optional Day Hike to Khayer Lake

Day nine marks your optional day at the Khopra Danda. On this day, you can go for a hike to Khayer Lake, located at the base of Annapurna South, which travelers rarely visit. The hike is challenging but absolutely rewarding, taking 8-9 hours for a round trip. Thus, you can even skip the hike as it is optional, but you’ll definitely miss something if you skip the day. 

The route to Khayer Lake climbs steadily into the mountains, passing through alpine meadows, rocky paths, and open landscapes. Along the way, you can see Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri up close. A 4-5 hour trek from Khopra Danda takes you to Khayer Lake. It is a sacred lake for Hindus, and during special festivals, pilgrims visit the lake to offer prayers. The peaceful and snowy peaks surround the area, making it a spiritual and untouched landscape. After spending some time at the beautiful lake, you’ll return to Khopra Danda for a night’s stay.

Day 10: Trek to Dobato (3,420m)

You’ll leave Khopra Danda after breakfast and make your way towards Dobato. It is a beautiful trek along the hillside. The route goes through forested areas, small streams, and open ridges. On the day, you’ll be walking up and down a mix of rocky and forest paths. The route is peaceful and offers a calm and real taste of trekking. 

A 5-6 hour walk from Khopra Danda takes you to Dobato. The village is famous for the Muldai viewpoint. As you get to the village, you’ll check into the local lodge. You’ll stay overnight and have dinner at the Lodge of Dobato. 

Day 11: Sunrise at Muldai Viewpoint & Trek to Chuile

Early in the morning, at around 5:00 a.m., you’ll go for a hike to Muldai viewpoint, located at an elevation of 3,637 m. The route is short but steep, requiring a headlamp for illumination. After about 45 minutes of hiking from Dobato village, you’ll get to the top of Muldai Viewpoint. From the top, you’ll be amazed by the panoramic sunrise view over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Nilgiri. 

After soaking in the sunrise beauty when the sky and mountains change their color, you’ll return to Dobato. You’ll have a hearty breakfast at the village and start your trek to Chuile. The route goes mostly downhill through dense forests of bamboo, rhododendrons, and oak trees. You’ll have lunch at Tadapani village and continue the trek through steep downhill terrain, arriving at your day’s destination, Chuile. Your overnight and dinner are at the Chuile.

Day 12 : Trek to Jhinudanda

After the morning meal at Chuile, the journey continues to descend. The pathway starts with a gentle walk through forests and small streams. You’ll pass through the Gurung village of Chhomrong along the way. There, you’ll have lunch while enjoying views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. From Chhomrong, the route goes steeply downhill on stone steps all the way to Jhinu Danda

It takes 4-5 hours to get to Jhinudanda from Chuile. After checking into your overnight accommodations, you can enjoy a bath in a natural hot spring. The hot spring lies about 20 minutes downhill, where you can soak in the natural warm water and rest your body after long trekking days. Your day’s overnight and dinner are at the lodge of Jhinudanda.

Day 13 : Trek to Pitam Deurali via Landruk & Tolka

Day thirteen starts with a warm cup of tea and a hearty breakfast at Jhinudanda. The day begins with a gentle walk downhill, crossing a suspension bridge over the Modi Khola River. From there, the route gently climbs and gets to the beautiful Gurung village of Landruk. You can stop by the village and enjoy tea or snacks while taking in the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning view of Annapurna South

After Landruk, you’ll continue walking through forested areas and small farmlands that will take you to Tolka, another charming village. The route then slowly ascends through the forest with some stone steps, leading to Pitam Deurali. Your day’s overnight and dinner are at the tea house of Pitam Deurali

Day 14: Trek to Kande via Australian Camp – Drive to Pokhara

Day fourteen marks the final day of trekking in the Annapurna region and the end of the Mohare Danda Khopra Trek. After breakfast at Pitam Deurali, you’ll begin your descent towards Kande. Today’s trek is mostly an easy and pleasant walk through forests. After a while of trekking, you’ll get to Australian Camp, a stunning hilltop stop with stunning views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre. 

At the Australian Camp, you’ll have your lunch, and you’ll rest for a while. Continuing the trek from there, the route gently descends through forest and stone steps, leading to Kande. Once you reach Kande, you’ll be taken back to Pokhara in a private jeep. Within 1.5 hours of a smooth ride through green hills and farmlands, you’ll get to Pokhara, where you’ll stay overnight.

Day 15: Free Day in Pokhara

Day fifteen starts with a warm cup of tea and a hearty morning meal while enjoying the view of Phewa Lake and the reflection of Mount Machhapuchhre in it. The day is your free day in Pokhara, which you can utilize to explore the city and its beauty. As Pokhara is famous for adventurous activities, including boating and paragliding, you can get involved in these activities. If you need our support, we’ll be there and will be glad to assist you.

Similarly, you can visit other prominent landmarks like the World Peace Pagoda, Sarangkot, Pumdikot, Davi’s Fall, Gupteshwor Cave, and other places on this day. Additionally, shopping or café-hopping is also an option. Your overnight stay for the day is at Pokhara for the last time.

Day 16: Return to Kathmandu by Tourist Bus

Day sixteen takes you to Kathmandu, the location where you first set foot to begin your trip. You’ll have your morning meal at your hotel and get to your tourist bus to drive back from Pokhara to Kathmandu. As you leave Pokhara, the bus slowly drives into the hills. The road passes through the Prithvi Highways that twist along the Trishuli River. You’ll pass the market towns of Damauli, Muglin, Malekhu, and Galchhi before getting to Kathmandu.

After 6-7 hours of driving, covering a distance of 200km, you’ll get to Kathmandu. Your bus will either take you to the tourist bus park in Sorkhakhutte or Kalanki. From the bus stop, we’ll pick you up to take you to your hotel, where you’ll stay overnight.

Day 17 : Final Departure

As you’ve completed your Mohare Danda Khopra Trek, it’s time to return to your home country. Thus, day seventeen marks the end of your journey in Nepal. Still, if you have time, you can stay in Kathmandu and explore the city. If not, we must bid farewell with a heavy heart, a mix of emotions that includes gratitude, reflection, and sadness. 

Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport. Our representatives will accompany you to the airport, assisting with your luggage and wishing you a safe journey. Hope you enjoyed the adventure, and see you again.

Where is Mohare Khopra Danda located?

Mohare Khopra Danda is located in the Annapurna region of Nepal in the Myagdi district. The destination lies between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges within the Annapurna Conservation Area. However, both are two different locations combined in one trekking itinerary due to their proximity.

Mohare Danda

Mohare Danda is part of the Community Eco-Trek initiative, a lower-altitude ridge located at an elevation of 3,300 meters above sea level. It lies west of Ghorepani, near Nagi village and often promoted as an alternative to Poon Hill. Although less popular than the trekking routes of the Annapurna region, the viewpoint of Mohare Danda offers equally scenic sunrise views and Panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Nilgiri.

Khopra Danda

Khopra Danda, also known as Khopra ridge, is a high-altitude ridge located at an elevation of 3,660 meters above sea level. It lies east of Mohare Danda, above the village of Swanta, and serves as a less-commercialized alternative to Annapurna Base Camp. Similarly, Khopra Danda is renowned for its ridgeline lodge, a high-altitude alpine setting, and as a side trip point to Khayer Lake. Additionally, the ridge offers panoramic views of a wide range of mountains, including Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m), Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Machapuchare, and Annapurna I.

What are the necessary permits for the Mohare Danda Khopra Trek?

As of 1 April 2023, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) is the only necessary permit for the Mohare Danda Khopra Trek. Earlier, the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card was also required; however, after COVID, there is no checkpost for the card, and obtaining the permit is no longer mandatory. The ACAP is mandatory because the journey to the Mohare and Khopra Danda Trek lies within the conservation area of Annapurna.
