Everest Three Passes Trek Trip Information

The Three Passes In Everest Region

Kongma La Pass (5,535 meters / 18,159 feet)

Kongma La is the highest of the three passes. It is in between the villages of Chhukung and Lobuche in the Khumbu region. Trekking over Kongma La is tough because of its high altitude and steep trails. To reach the top of the pass, you have to pass a long climb and descent. It is the most challenging section of the entire journey. From the top of Kongma La, you will see amazing views of the surrounding peaks, including Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu. The landscape includes rocky terrain, glaciers, and snow-covered mountains. To complete the pass, it is essential for you to have a proper acclimatization plan.

Cho La Pass (5,420 meters / 17,782 feet)

Cho La connects the villages of Dzongla and Thagnak, which are part of the Gokyo Valley. It is the second pass of the Three Passes Trek. You have to walk on a glacier, making the trail slippery and dangerous. There is also a steep climb on both sides of the pass. This makes it a challenging but exciting adventure. At the top of Cho La, you will see panoramic views of the Everest region, including the towering peaks of Ama Dablam and Cholatse. The pass is surrounded by ice and snow, creating a dramatic landscape. The trail can be icy, especially in winter, so proper gear like crampons may be needed.

Renjo La Pass (5,360 meters / 17,585 feet)

Renjo La links the Gokyo Valley with the Bhote Koshi Valley. It is the last pass of the Three Passes Trek. The trek to Renjo La is less steep compared to the other two passes, but it is still strenuous due to the high altitude. With less crowd on the trail, you can enjoy the serene beauty more freely and immerse fully in the surrounding landscapes. Upon reaching the top, you will witness beautiful views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the beautiful Gokyo Lakes. Although less steep, the high altitude still poses a risk of altitude sickness. You need to be well-prepared and acclimatized.

What can you expect from the Everest Three Passes Trek?

Trekking towards the Everest Base Camp trek, you will undertake an exciting journey towards the Himalayas. Considered to be the most difficult trekking journey in the Everest Region, you will cross the three high-altitude passes: Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La. Also, with this trek, you will reach the base camp of Mount Everest while witnessing the beautiful Gokyo Valley. You will witness the beautiful views of towering peaks and glacial lakes throughout the journey. This trek can be a rewarding experience for you, which you can cherish for a lifetime.

Culturally, you will immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Sherpa people. Along the trail, you will encounter vibrant Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, where you will experience the warmth of local hospitality and the influence of Tibetan Buddhism. If you want to witness traditional Buddhist practices, you can visit one of the oldest and most ancient monasteries, the Tengboche Monastery. Taking this trek, you will better understand the local culture and spiritual heritage.

In terms of facilities, you will find that accommodations along the trek range from basic teahouses to more comfortable lodges. While amenities like running water and electricity may be limited, you will have access to essential facilities, including communal toilets. Some teahouses may offer hot showers and charging facilities for electronic devices, though availability can vary depending on the location and altitude. Despite these modest amenities, the warm hospitality of the local hosts and the spectacular surroundings will make your trek an unforgettable experience.

How difficult is the Everest 3 Passes trek?

The Everest Three Passes Trek is considered one of the most challenging treks in the Himalayas. Taking this trail, you will have to face physically demanding terrain. Involving icy sections, steep ascends and descends, along with the unpredictability of the weather, is quite difficult. The three high passes, Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La, over 5000 meters, are the major highlight and the major challenges to overcome. To complete this trek, you must have good acclimatization plans and better physical preparations.

Graded 8 out of 10, the Everest Three Passes Trek demands a high level of fitness and endurance. You will need to be prepared for long days of trekking, typically lasting 6-8 hours, with some days reaching high altitudes. The trek also requires good navigation skills. Another barrier for you can be language, as people in Nepal’s Himalayas are not familiar with English. Located at a high elevation, you can also have difficulty finding the best quality amenities. No matter what challenges you encounter, the overall trek experience you get can make your journey worthy.

Best Time to Take Everest Three Passes Trek

The best time to take the Everest Three Passes Trek is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons, specifically from late March to early May and from late September to early November. We recommend you avoid the monsoon season (June to August) and the winter months (December to February), as heavy snowfall, potential landslides, and extreme cold can make the trek more hazardous and difficult.

Post Monsoon:

During the spring, you will experience relatively stable weather conditions and clear skies, making it ideal for trekking. The temperatures are mild, and the trekking trails are usually free of heavy snow, which facilitates easier passage through the high passes. Additionally, you will witness the blooming of wildflowers, adding vibrant colors to the landscape. However, be prepared as you might encounter slight rainfall on the journey.

Pre Monsoon:

Another ideal season for trekking to Three Passes is autumn. Like spring, it offers excellent trekking conditions, with clear skies and stable weather. The temperatures are cooler than in spring, which makes trekking more comfortable. Snow and ice on the passes have usually melted or become less challenging, making the trek more manageable. However, you should be prepared for colder temperatures at higher altitudes.

Accommodation Facilities on Everest Three Passes Trek

Accommodation on the Everest Three Passes Trek primarily consists of teahouses and lodges, which offer basic but comfortable amenities. You will find that most teahouses provide communal rooms with simple bedding, and while electricity is available in some lodges, it is often limited to a few hours each day, typically powered by solar or a generator. Charging facilities for electronic devices may be available but often come with an additional fee.

Regarding water and toilet facilities, running water is not consistently available, particularly at higher altitudes, so you should be prepared for the use of bucket or bowl water in some places. Toilets are generally of the squat variety and are shared among guests. Some lodges may have more modern facilities, including Western-style toilets, but these are less common and often limited to lower altitudes. It’s advisable to carry personal water purification tablets and a portable toilet kit for added comfort and convenience.

Food and Water available during this trek

During the Everest Three Passes Trek, you will find a variety of food options. You will primarily eat at teahouses and lodges along the trek, where the menu typically includes a range of local and international dishes. You can expect to find staple foods such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), momo (dumplings), noodles, and a variety of soups. While vegetarian and some vegan options are usually available, choices may become more limited as you ascend higher. The quality and variety of food generally improve at lower altitudes, with simpler fare provided at higher camps.

For drinking water, you will need to purify it yourself, as clean, safe drinking water is not always readily available. Teahouses often provide boiled water, which you can use after ensuring it’s properly filtered or treated with purification tablets or a portable filter. As you reach higher altitudes, sources of water may be more scarce, and you may need to purchase bottled water, though this can be expensive and less environmentally friendly. Carrying your own water purification system is highly recommended to ensure safe hydration throughout the trek.
