Body
Base Layers: The first piece of clothing you wear is the base layer. Bringing merino wool base clothes is highly recommended because your clothes get mostly sticky from sweat. We recommend bringing them due to their moist texture. Merino clothes are also not so expensive, so we recommend Merino wool base layers if you want to trek ebc.
Insulation Layer: After the base layer comes the insulation layer, and the clothes of this layer are mostly made up of fleece material. Fleece jackets and Fleece pants are sold. If you’re trekking, these gears are recommended as they are lightweight, allowing you to walk easily without much difficulty. Popular brands are The North Face, Columbia, and Rei.
Outer Layer: This final layer consists of warm, waterproof clothes to be worn outside the insulation layer. These are mainly used for trekking at higher altitudes, with less favorable weather and climate. The outer gear in Kathmandu will mostly be a cheap knockoff, so maybe spend a bit more money on the outer layer to be safe from bad weather. The Northface, mountain hardware, and Hagloffs are highly recommended due to their excellent material.
Trekking Trousers and Shorts: You must bring at least a pair of trousers and shorts if you want to trek to mount everest. Bring something flexible and comfortable for walking. Good quality trekking trousers and shorts are Trespass and Columbia.
Trekking Shirts: Bring at least four pairs of trekking shirts. Don’t buy cotton shirts as they absorb sweat and make wearing impossible.
Waterproof Jacket and Trousers: As you trek to a higher altitude to complete the trek, the weather and climatic conditions might not be good. So bring a good-quality waterproof jacket and trousers, and don’t hesitate to spend more money to get them.
Underwear: Consider packing long underwear, at least three pairs. Bring them as you will need them.
Headwear
Hat: Hats are essential for a trekker as they protect from beams of sunlight.
Beanie: Beanies can also be worn if you don’t prefer hats, but they are mostly worn to protect from cold. They keep your head warm.
Neck Gaiter: A neck gaiter is essential to protect your mouth and neck from wind gusts. For winter, even baklava could be worn.
Gloves
Inner Gloves: If the temperature is average, neither too hot nor too cold, then you can wear light inner gloves.
Outer Insulated Gloves: Outer Insulated gloves could be worn if you are trekking in colder weather conditions, which are unfavorable.
Footwear
Hiking Boots: Good hiking boots are a must. You will trek for many days, so pack good-quality, long-lasting boots.
Trekking Shoes / Sandals: Trekking shoes can be packed. If you stop at a tea house, you can wear them rather than boots, but we recommend you trek wearing boots rather than shoes.
Hiking Socks/Warm Thermal Socks: Warm hiking socks protect your feet. Bring at least four pairs, and merino wool is the preferred material.
Gaiters: Gaiters help protect your ankle area, which is left exposed after you wear your shoes. They prevent you from getting mud or snow on it.
Trekking Equipment
Bags and Backpacks: You should buy a good-quality trekking suitcase, at least a 45L one. Don’t hesitate to spend money on a good-quality Bag, as you will need one for the trek.
Duffel Bag: A duffel bag is necessary when hiring a porter for longer treks. You could store your emergency clothes in it throughout the trek.
Backpack: If you don’t have a budget for hiring a poster, you can bring a 50-60L backpack. These bags will help you keep essential things. Osprey is a good-quality Backpack.
Daypack: You could bring a daypack to store your electronic gadgets, cameras, and even dry fruits.
Rain cover: A good-quality rain cover is needed for a backpack. If it rains or snows, all your clothes will be soaked, so a rain cover is required to prevent this.
Sleeping Gear: You must carry a sleeping bag that can withstand cold, strong air breezes. You don’t know that the lodges are complete, and sleeping bags will be handy if you sleep in the kitchen.
Accessories
Day Backpack Cover: The Day Backpack cover covers your bag from various external entities like rain, mud, etc.
Water Bottle: A water bottle holding at least 2 liters of water is necessary. You will also be thirsty along the trek, so carrying a water bottle to store at least 2 liters of water is essential.
Hydration system: You need to hydrate yourself because as you trek, the more you sweat, so there is no better way to hydrate yourself from electrolytes and water.
First Aid Kits and Medications
Medicine: To make your trek healthy, pack medication for fever, high altitude, and digestion.
Painkillers, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, and Advil: These medicines are necessary for any trek to avoid sickness and difficulty. Aspirin helps stop blood clotting.
Diamox or Acetazolamide: Diamox is a popular medicine among trekkers that helps to prevent acute mountain sickness (AMS). This preventive medicine doesn’t directly treat AMS.
Sunscreen: Sunscreen is worn to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun
Lip Balm: Lip balm protects your lips from drying out.
Hand Sanitizer: You need to pack hand sanitizer, as your hands will be sweaty, and sanitizer helps kill germs.
Lightweight Snacks: Carry lightweight snacks with you, which are rich in carbs and protein.
Electrolytes: Electrolytes are needed to replenish strength in your body while trekking, as your body will be dehydrated.
Additional Tips
Some additional tips while packing for your trek would be to buy high-quality gear or rent them. Another tip would be to try using knockoff trekking gear, which would be cheap. High-quality products come at a price, so using cheap knockoff trekking gear wouldn’t be so bad. So, like this, you have a complete packing list.
Buy or Rent
Buying gear will be expensive, but renting them will be much cheaper. While you trek, you should buy quality products. However, these trekking gear come at a price, so there is also a renting system. You pay a small amount, and you rent quality products.
Try Using Knock-off Trekking Gear
You could also buy knock-off trekking gear if you can’t afford quality original products. The knock-off products might not be as durable as the original, but they will surely hold out for a one-time trek.
CONCLUSION
So, always pack light and sensibly for your trek. You don’t want to pack everything, and later, it will be difficult for you to carry your bag. The correct packing list would include a Warm pair of clothes, woolen socks, waterproof clothes, and a bag cover. Medicine is essential, and you should never miss out on it while packing. Think about what gears would be vital for you throughout the trek, and then pack accordingly.
