Similarly, Ngozumpa Glacier, Khumbu Icefall, Khumbu Glacier, and Imja Glacier are located here. The park area above 5000 meters consists of 69% barren land, 28% grazing land, and 3% forested area

Due to the varying altitude, travelers can experience several climatic zones. The altitude above 3000 meters has temperate and subalpine climatic zones. Meanwhile, the altitude above 4000 meters is the alpine zone, and the climatic zone above 5000 meters is the nivel zone. Depending on the altitude, the temperature also varies. The monsoon influences the lower altitude areas of the Sagarmatha National Park during summer.

History & Cultural Significance Of Sagarmatha National Park

Sagarmatha National Park was established on 19 July 1976 by the department of national parks and wildlife conservation and the government of Nepal. It became the first national park in Nepal to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. In January 2002, a buffer zone covering an area of 275 sq km was added to the park. The park opened its doors to visitors in the early 1960s, and by 2003, 19,000 travelers had visited.

The purpose of Sagarmatha National Park is to protect the area’s diverse and unique biodiversity and cultural heritage. The name Sagarmatha is made up of two words: “Sagar,” which means “sky,” and “Matha,” which means “head.” Hence, Sagarmatha translates to “the head in a great blue sky.” Mount Everest is also known as Mount Sagarmatha in the Nepalese language. Meanwhile, the mountain is known as “Qomolangma,” which means “holy mother” in the Tibetan language.

As of 2005, around 3500 Sherpa people live in more than 20 settlements along the trails of the national park. The largest monastery in the Khumbu region, the Tengboche Monastery, is also located in Sagarmatha National Park. Similarly, there are numerous stupas, gompas, small monasteries, and mani walls here. Due to its natural and cultural significance, Sagarmatha National Park was designated as a Natural World Heritage Site.

Biodiversity Of Sagarmatha National Park

The biodiversity found in Sagarmatha National Park is diverse and unique. Due to its varying altitude and climatic zones, various flora and fauna are found here. The national park has more than 1000 floral species. In the lower altitude regions, the firs, rhododendrons, and Himalayan birch mainly cover the areas. From an elevation of 4000 to 5000 meters, juniper and rhododendron groves are mostly found. Similarly, various mosses and liches grow in altitudes above 5000 meters. In glacier-covered landscapes, there is no vegetation.

Many rare and endangered wildlife species inhabit the national park. It is home to wildlife like the red panda, snow leopard, musk deer, Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan wolf, and more. Likewise, around 208 species of birds are found within the park, which includes the Himalayan Monal (Impeyan pheasant), blood pheasant, snow partridge, golden eagle, bearded vulture, and more. The national park has also been designated an Important Bird Area.

How To Get There?

The most popular and common way to reach the Everest region, where Sagarmatha National Park is located, is via flight. Various airlines operate regular flights between Kathmandu and Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The flight to Tenzing Hillary Airport, Lukla, from Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, takes around 30 minutes. It is also possible to take a helicopter ride to Lukla. The helicopter ride is convenient and luxurious, but it is expensive. Sharing a helicopter is more budget-friendly than chartering one.

The Tenzing Hillary Airport is one of the most dangerous airports in Nepal. In addition to a short and mountain-side runway, the weather in Lukla changes without warning. Hence, the flights may get delayed even during on seasons. In case of heavy air traffic in Kathmandu, the flight can be diverted to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap. It takes 4 to 5 hours to get to Ramchapp from the capital city and vice versa. However, flying from Manthali Airport to Luka takes only around 20 minutes.

Those who want to taste authentic traveling in Nepal can also opt for ground transportation. There are no roadways connecting the capital city with Lukla. So, travelers can either drive to Jiri, which is also known as the Pioneer’s route, or drive to Phaplu. From Jiri, you must trek to Lukla, which can take 7 to 8 days. Meanwhile, trekking from Phaplu to Lukla takes 3 to 4 days.

Travelers who have flexible schedules can take ground transportation. However, the best way to get to Sagarmatha National Park is to take a standard flight from Kathmandu or Manthali to Tenzing Hillary Airport, Lukla. Then, you can slowly trek to the national park.

Weather & Climate

There are four seasons in Nepal, and Sagarmatha National Park also experiences various climates and weather conditions depending on the season. The best time to visit the national park and trek in Nepal is spring and autumn. Summer and winter also have their own unique characteristics, but the challenging weather may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the best seasons to visit Sagarmatha National Park. The weather is clear and stable at this time of the year. The temperature gradually warms up after a long winter, so the flora and fauna also become active. As a result, the flora and fauna start to become active. It is also the best time to witness the blooming rhododendron groves in different colors of red, pink, and white.

Similarly, trekkers may catch sightings of rare and endangered species like the red panda, musk deer, Himalayan Tahr, snow leopard, Himalayan monal, and more. The chances of rainfall are minimal, so travelers can enjoy pleasant weather during trekking.

Summer (June to August)

The monsoon season coincides with the summer season in Nepal. Most hilly and lower regions receive heavy rainfall, with an average of 500 to 550 mm. Hence, there is also a risk of landslides and mudslides in hilly areas. Visibility is also poor during the summer, so flights are highly likely to be delayed or canceled.

Trekkers must carry rain gear and equipment when trekking in the summer. During this time, there are few crowds on the trails, and the vegetation and landscapes look fresh and vibrant. However, the rain also makes the trails wet and slippery.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is the best season to visit Sagarmatha National Park. It has the most stable weather, climatic conditions, and mild temperatures. Due to the monsoon effect, there can be slight rainfall in early September. The rain soon leaves the country, leaving the trails dry and fresh. The landscapes look lush, and the autumn foliage makes them vibrant. Similarly, visibility is extremely clear in autumn.

Travelers can enjoy the best views of the Himalayas and the surrounding scenery. Because of the great weather conditions, trekking is more comfortable and enjoyable. However, there are many fellow trekkers and travelers on the trails. So, the trails are crowded, and travelers should book their flights and accommodations in advance.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is an off-season for trekking and traveling in Nepal. It starts snowing in the higher regions of the country, and higher altitude areas within the Sagarmatha National Park are also covered with snow. The temperature also drops below the freezing point. Likewise, the weather becomes unpredictable, and visibility can be poor. The higher you go, the colder and extreme the weather becomes.

The trails are icy and slippery in wintertime, while snow can block the high mountain passes. Despite this, many seasoned trekkers choose the winter season for trekking. The extreme weather and snowy landscapes intrigue adventurous trekkers. There are very few trekkers and travelers on the trails. But winter is the best time to witness the glorious views of the snow-capped Himalayas and snow-covered landscapes of the Khumbu region.
